A music film by
Jochem van Tol
Jiska Rickels

With
Ibelisse Guardia
Ferragutti

SYNOPSIS
In an old empty paper factory we follow a woman playing with mesmerizing sculptures of paper.
Inspired by the design of Japanese gardens, #16 by The Paper Ensemble invites you to be receptive to a world made entirely out of the sounds of paper: Crackling bushes, ocean waves and singing whales.

Statement
#16 is the first short music film of artist and composer Jochem van Tol (1983). Inspired by the designs of Japanese Gardens, van Tol created a new composition for sound and image in which both intertwine equally and co-exist. With Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti he developed a series of sculptural paper instruments and show how much there is to discover in the most simple material and how to choose radical consequences from these discoveries.

For #16, the sixteenth work of The Paper Ensemble, van Tol collaborated together with director Jiska Rickels.

“The Paper Ensemble give the visitor the opportunity to have an aesthetic experience that would remain hidden if not presented through the work of art. They challenge the borders of what we would define as an object, an image or a (musical) sound. They could be heard as regular sounds, or (when blowing against a sheet of the thinnest paper) not been heard at all, but by putting these sounds in a specific composition, well timed and precisely played, the sounds attain a musical and performative quality that challenges the visitor’s awareness of sound and music in general. The Paper Ensemble catches the magic of a silent material and enlarges it in a poetic and moving way.” (MOCA, Hiroshima, Japan. 2009)
